Design at READ

READ has its own dedicated design team working within the Development & Engineering department, which also carries out design work for our clients. All design for new HETS products and support for existing tools and equipment are carried out at the main office in Aberdeen.

The design team of six uses the latest Inventor solid modelling package to engineer the entire HETS product range including the running and deployment tools.  We use material selection and mathematical analysis software to further aid the design process.

Much of the HETS technology requires the use of high pressure (>30000psi) equipment for use in downhole deployment operations and in our in-house testing programs.  Such extreme high pressures give rise to very demanding technical challenges - (typically high pressure equipment is generally only rated up to 15Ksi). For this reason, we have had to develop our own high pressure designs and have built up considerable expertise in this field.

The design of expandable tubulars relies heavily on non-linear Finite Element (FE) analysis to predict how a material will behave when plastically expanded due to hydraulic pressure. At READ we have two full time FE analysts running the state of the art Abaqus FE package. Actual test programs allow further verification of these designs. A more detailed account of this analytical tool is available in the FEA section.
